This collection from Dr. Benson Tong contains oral histories on cassette tapes, copies of photos, newspaper articles, and statistics charts from the “Beyond Black and White: Hispanic and Asian Americans in Twentieth-Century Wichita” exhibit displayed at the Wichita Public Library in May and June of 2002. The majority of the materials are enlarged photocopies. Dates on materials reflect the dates of the original materials and the information they contain, not the dates on which the photocopies were made.

Literary Rights

Literary rights were not granted to Wichita State University. When permission is granted to examine the manuscripts, it is not an authorization to publish them. Manuscripts cannot be used for publication without regard for common law literary rights, copyright laws and the laws of libel. It is the responsibility of the researcher and his/her publisher, to obtain permission to publish. Scholars and students who eventually plan to have their work published are urged to make inquiry regarding overall restrictions on publication before initial research.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Benson Tong, a history professor at Wichita State University, arranged an exhibit on the Latinx and Asian communities of Wichita for display at the Wichita Public Library from May to June 2002. The exhibit, titled “Beyond Black and White: Hispanic and Asian Immigrants in Twentieth-Century Wichita,” included oral histories and photos of Latinx and Asian Americans who worked in different industries, were involved in sports, as well as photos of immigrants either assimilating into American culture or maintain their own customs. Books, both fiction and non-, depicting Latinx and Asian culture were highlighted during the exhibit.
