The letters in this collection were received by Alfred H. Buck, an early Kansas settler in Lawrence and Big Springs, Kansas. Their subjects range from family matters to frontier farming in Kansas. Comments on prices for agricultural products, weather, transportation, livestock, farming techniques, and hazards such as insects and crop diseases are mentioned. The correspondents also report on epidemic diseases such as typhoid fever and smallpox. Dating between 1854 and 1879, the letters were sent mainly from New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
